- Find a technique
Hatching is a pre-requisite to implantation and is a process that is normally carried out by the embryo itself.
During this process, the embryo breaks out from its outer layer called the pellucid zone to be able to attach itself to the endometrium.
It has been suggested that creating a minor defect in the shell allows for a better chance of embryo implantation. During an assisted hatching technique, a micro-needle is loaded with an acidified solution and is quickly and gently applied to a small area of the outer membrane until the area is dissolved, creating a tiny hole and providing the embryo with an artificial way of escaping.
