Spermatic DNA fragmentation

The study of sperm DNA is a diagnostic test that is carried out to determine what percentage ofsperm have breaks in their DNA. The presentation of a high percentage of sperm DNA fragmentation is related to a decrease in embryo quality, as well as the implantation rate and poor results in assisted reproduction techniques. This technique consists in detecting directly, the existing breaks in the spermatic DNA, by means of the use of probes that emit fluorescence.

This study is indicated in cases of:

- Varicocele and inflammatory diseases.
- Advanced age of the male.
- After chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment.
- Repeat abortions.
- Bad embryo quality in previous cycles.
- Infertility of unknown cause.

Patients with a high percentage of fragmentation may benefit from the application of laboratory techniques to select sperm without fragmented DNA.
